Watch this tutorial on how to test foundation colors to find your best match.

How to read foundation bottles with confidence

Go to the right depth range

Most brands organize foundations from light to deep. Start by going straight to the section that matches your depth. Don’t bounce around the display. Staying in your depth lane prevents overbuying and frustration.

Read the undertone code

Look closely at the shade label or description. Many brands use letters or words:

  • C / Cool – pink, rosy, bluish

  • W / Warm – yellow, golden, peach

  • N / Neutral – balanced

  • Olive – green or muted (often between warm and neutral)

Example: If you’re Light-Medium + Neutral, look for shades labeled Light-Medium N or similar.

Ignore the shade name

Names can be misleading. Focus on:

  • Depth placement in the lineup

  • Undertone letter or description

If two shades seem close, choose the one that best matches your neck and chest, not your face.
